Since your lake/pond can be the focal point of your property, the addition of a decorative fountain can further enhance the aesthetic beauty of your waterbody. Fountains can be a beautiful addition to any waterbody and require little maintenance. There are many advantages to installing a fountain in your waterbody. These include:

• Fountains can double as aerators to promote aerobic decomposition of organic materials.

• Fountains increase the dissolved oxygen at the benthic level and aid in water circulation reducing stagnation.

• Increased water circulation speeds up the nutrient decomposition cycle in the water resulting in less available nutrients for algae blooms and vascular plant growth.

• Fountains also provide oxygen to the lower depths of the waterbody. This is beneficial to fisheries. A sharp rise and fall in temperature as much as 12 degrees in a seven day period causes stress in the fisheries of the lake/pond. The addition of a fountain will help circulate the water and establish a uniform temperature by eliminating temperature stratification throughout the water column.

When designing a fountain layout within any waterbody there are a few simple rules to keep in mind. These rules are as follows:

• Provide 1.5 HP for every surface acre, 2 HP if the waterbody is particularly stagnant.

• Take into consideration the shape of the waterbody, so that placement of aerating fountains will provide the optimal water circulation where the greatest amount of water movement can be obtained.

• Choose an appropriate spray pattern for your fountain. The spray pattern that is the most beneficial in improving water circulation is one in which the spray circulates a high volume of water over a broad area. This spray pattern increases the time the fountain water is in contact +with the air and promotes a greater exchange of oxygen prior to return to the waterbody.
